Who Knew???

For some reason, I thought some things were just common sense, even for toddlers. I'm learning, however, that everything is learning experience. Here's one example...

Earlier this month the boys went to their first 'friends' birthday party...

Liam, Aidan & Connor ready to wish Kaleb, Kyle, and Makayla a Happy 2nd Birthday!!!
It was sooo much fun... lots of children to play with, tons of new toys to explore, delicious food, AND CUPCAKES!!!

Since the cupcakes were passed out at the very end of the party, and because all the other party goers already left, I really wanted my boys to eat their cupcakes fast, which they did not. After spending a good 10 minutes eating the darn (delicious and messy) things, I warned the boys that it was almost time to go. I continued on, telling them that they could each take one more bite, and then we would say our goodbyes and thank yous before heading to our car.

Then the "not-so common sense" thing happened... As I watched Liam size up is big crumb of cupcake he had left, I could see that he was not pleased with his "last bite" option. I was worried that he was going to take one of his brothers (who both had quite a bit left), so I continued to keep a close eye on him. Then, before I could stop him, the boy grabbed his big wad of cupcake paper that was sitting next to his plate, and stuffed it in his mouth.

It honestly never crossed my mind to 'teach' my boys to not eat cupcake paper lining. Minutes before, I did give them a lesson about how to peel the paper off the cupcakes, but after thinking about it, I I never explained to them what they were peeling off, or why. Oops!

A more recent picture of Liam, after his 'cupcake etiquette' lesson at home...
From the looks of him, most people would consider the lesson a failure since he was cupcaked, head to toe. I, on the other hand, consider it a success since he didn't attempt to eat the paper again, even after the rest of his cupcake was "all gone" :-).

Way to go Liam, my quick study!
