Not a Good Morning!!!

One morning last week I had 2 blow-out diapers and had to 'fish' some poop out of the tub. I thought that was a real bad way to start the day, but I learned this week that it can get sooo much worse. Yesterday I had to call poison control (drug overdose) AND make an emergency call to our pediatrician (bloody head), all before 8:15a.m...

Liam and Connor have been taking antibiotics to treat their ear infections for the last 10 days. One would think by the last day I would be a pro at administering the medicine, nope! Rather than giving Connor his antibiotic, I gave him Liam's, which was the same drug, but double the potency. I realized my mistake almost immediately (when I went to give Liam his drugs), and called poison control. Thank goodness a few minutes later I learned that the extra drugs didn't hurt Connor, and the worst that could happen would be the need of a few extra diaper changes that day... Phew, that crisis was behind us and I learned from my mistake. I will never again give the wrong medicine to one of my children.

The next hour was pretty typical... breakfast, bath and play, that is until a metal picture frame fell 5 1/2 feet off our armoire, right onto Aidan's head. I saw the whole thing happen in super slow motion, which as it turned out was NOT a good thing. I immediately grabbed him to put pressure on his forehead/ scalp to stop the bleeding. I did this sitting down, as I wasn't feeling too strong after watching the sharpest and pointiest part of the frame gouge Aidan. Within a few minutes, the bleeding stopped and Aidan was no longer crying. I called my pediatrician, and after listening to the whole chain of events, I was advised to allow him to take his nap, while checking on him regularly. Once he woke, I was to take him to her office or the ER, depending on my preference. After Aidan fell asleep I arranged for Kelly to watch the other boys later in the morning so I could focus all of my attention on poor (and very tough) Aidan.

Once he woke, I saw that Aidan's head didn't look as bad as it did earlier so I just took him to our pediatrician. The little trouper smiled the whole time he was being poked and prodded, which made everyone believe that there was not anything serious going on. Plus, it was determined during examination that the gouge was not deep and that he would not need stitches/ staples. In hindsight, since this was my first blood and head injury, I think I might have overreacted. That said, I know the outcome could have been so different, so much worse. In the last day and half, I have thanked God several times for teaching me a few tough lessons, with very minor consequences.

I contemplated about blogging about yesterday morning, as I made some mistakes and I don't want the whole world to know about my challenges. I am so thankful that my boys are okay, though, and want to always remember to not become careless or take my 'boring' days for granted. I promise the next time I post, however, to be back to my happy stories with adorable pictures :-).

Oh perfect, I did find an sweet picture to post (my nephew and Godson Joey) in the awful picture frame that injured my little Aidan... The top of the barn is what gouged him and the silo gave him a decent scrape. Sorry Joey, you're going in a safe drawer for a while.
